Applications of nylon pulleys in cranes

Jan 05, 2026

Current Status of Crane Pulleys

Currently, cranes manufactured in my country generally use cast and welded pulleys. Due to the extremely low strength and toughness of gray cast iron, gray cast iron pulleys are prone to breakage during use. While ductile iron has higher strength and toughness than gray cast iron, its processability is poor, especially the high hardness of the rope groove surface, which affects the service life of the wire rope. Welded pulleys are generally made of A3 or 20 steel, with low carbon content, possessing ideal plasticity and impact resistance; however, the quality of welded pulleys is difficult to guarantee, making them unsuitable for mass production. A more significant drawback is the large weight of both cast and welded pulleys, which significantly impacts the lifting characteristics and overall performance of engineering cranes.

Advantages of Nylon Pulleys

Nylon pulleys are suitable for use at high altitudes, possessing advantages such as high strength, good rigidity, low specific gravity, wear resistance, friction reduction, oil resistance, corrosion resistance, ease of processing and molding, and low price. Using MC nylon as the material for crane pulleys can increase pulley life by approximately 4-5 times and wire rope life by approximately 10 times, significantly improving the lifting characteristics and overall performance of the crane.

Nylon Pulley Technical Specifications

The comprehensive technical specifications of nylon are shown in the table below. This type of nylon has resistance to ultraviolet aging and low-temperature embrittlement. Centrifugal casting must be used to manufacture crane pulleys.
